Inspiring Educational Aspirations: A Role Model Intervention to Combat Poverty in Rural Bangladesh

Youth Policy Forum (YPF)

In Bangladesh, only half of students reach grade 10, with dropout rates highest among poor families. This crisis perpetuates multidimensional poverty by limiting earnings, health and empowerment, and constraining opportunities. Economic pressures, low perceived returns to education, lack of role models, and early marriage influence dropout rates. Researchers at Youth Policy Forum will test whether video-based role model interventions can influence these educational decisions. The study will show secondary school students in poor rural areas videos featuring relatable role models from rural backgrounds who achieved success through education. One-third of students will watch the videos at school, one-third of students and their parents will watch the videos, and one-third will serve as a comparison group. Researchers will measure changes in educational aspirations and beliefs, role model awareness, family dynamics and economic behaviours, and academic performance. The aim is to test this intervention as a cost-effective and easily scalable tool to promote school completion and break the cycle of poverty.
