Navigating Extreme Poverty: Socioeconomic, Political, and Climate Dynamics in Bangladesh

South Asian Network for Economic Modeling (SANEM)

Extreme poverty remains a persistent challenge in Bangladesh and, while previous research has examined poverty trends, there is a lack of comprehensive evidence on the socioeconomic, environmental, and political factors influencing extreme poverty dynamics. Researchers at the South Asian Network for Economic Modeling (SANEM) will address this gap by firstly examining the dynamics of extreme poverty and its socioeconomic causes and identifying the pull factors that enable a transition out of poverty. This work will include adjusting existing extreme poverty measures to increase accuracy by taking into account expenditure on essential non-food essentials such as housing, healthcare, and education. Additionally, they will investigate the causal relationship between climate change and extreme poverty and will explore the political economy of extreme poverty, emphasising how corruption and systemic political and economic structures create poverty traps for many groups. The team will share their findings widely via policy briefs, three national-level dialogues and training programmes for early-career researchers, bureaucrats, and policymakers.
