New Poverty among Smallholder Farmers in Bangladesh: Gendered Vulnerabilities and Adaptive Strategies

ChangeMaker Nexus Ltd.

Existing studies on rural poverty in Bangladesh focus primarily on chronic rural poverty or the broad economic impacts of climate change, yet few explore how specific climate shocks, and institutional responses, reinforce gendered economic disparities. Researchers at ChangeMaker Nexus Ltd. will address this gap by integrating gendered vulnerabilities, environmental shocks, and adaptive strategies into a single analytical framework. They will focus on the 2024 waterlogging crisis in Narail, Jessore, and Khulna which submerged at least 300 villages, destroyed standing crops, made farmlands unusable for subsequent planting seasons and spread waterborne disease. The team will survey smallholder farmers in Khulna to capture information including coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies, gender-specific barriers to recovery, and perceptions of institutional support and policy interventions. Findings will identify sustainable financial models and gender-sensitive policies that enhance farmers’ access to credit, insurance, and adaptive agricultural technologies, with the aim of informing policy which will help farming communities withstand future shocks and transition towards long-term economic security.
