Climate Smart Agriculture for Poverty Reduction
AGRI BILCHA AGRICULTURE PLC
Seventy percent of the population of Ethiopia relies on subsistence agriculture, but climate change is projected to reduce crop yields, threatening food security and exacerbating poverty. Research carried out by AGRI BILCHA AGRICULTURE PLC will promote the cultivation of enset – a climate resilient crop. Enset is indigenous to Ethiopia and is harvested throughout the year. It is rich in nutrients, able to thrive in the face of drought and has a high economic return. It is planted by an estimated 25 million households in the ‘Enset Belt’, in the south and central regions, however the majority of farming in the country is focussed around cereal crops. Using sample surveys and modelling work, researchers will undertake field work in selected areas of the ‘Enset Belt’. Their work will generate primary data on best practices and technologies related to enset production and processing for optimum yield, feeding into and supporting the Government of Ethiopia’s plans to scale-up enset production across the country.
