Technology and Local Knowledge for Soil Fertility Improvement: An Innovation to Eradicate Poverty in Fandriana (Tsa-afiF)
CR-AT2D
In Fandriana, over 80% of farming households live below the poverty line, in large part due to declining soil fertility. Women play a central role in preserving soils through traditional knowledge and practices, yet their contributions are often overlooked. For this project, a research team at CR-AT2D will combine rural women’s expertise with modern soil-mapping technologies to enhance soil fertility and increase agricultural productivity, ultimately helping to reduce poverty across the commune. The team will collect soil samples from over 100 representative sites, analyse their physico-chemical properties in the laboratory, and produce a detailed soil fertility map. Individual surveys and field observations will document gender-differentiated practices for maintaining and improving soil fertility. Using this combined knowledge, the project will develop practical, location-specific strategies that integrate local and scientific approaches, creating a spatial tool to guide farmers and inform agricultural interventions. This evidence-based approach aims to support a sustainable agricultural transformation in Fandriana and empower local communities.
