Exploring and elevating the socio-economic impacts of mothers of children with disabilities: a case study of a women’s cultural collective in Dar es Salaam
Open University
Caregivers of children with disabilities often face emotional and societal challenges that can push them towards or deeper into poverty and impact the developmental outcomes of their children. This research, conducted by the Open University, looks at whether these challenges can be mitigated when mothers are part of a supportive collective. The work will focus on The Uhuru Mama Collective (UMC), which empowers women through mutual aid, emotional support, and economic cooperation with the aim of improving the socioeconomic status and inclusion of mothers. Using quantative data collection, observational studies and focus groups, and including mothers of children with disabilities as co-researchers, the project will will evaluate the impact of the Uhuru Mama Collective on its members, focusing on economic improvements and the psychological wellbeing of mothers and the educational outcomes and social integration of their children. Insights from this study could inform the scaling of this model across Tanzania.
