(IHI) Understanding the drivers and influence of household and geographical poverty on health: demand and supply of healthcare in Tanzania
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI)
Poor health is one of the drivers of poverty and living in poverty makes it less likely that people will have access to healthcare when they need it – further impacting their health and potentially pushing them deeper into poverty. This vicious cycle will be examined by the Ifakara Health Institute, with research led by Peter Binyaruka, as they work to understand the complex relationship between poverty and access to healthcare. Remote regions often face a scarcity of health workers and healthcare facilities as well as limited transportation networks. These factors all impact access to health care. The research will examine both geographical and household financial barriers to healthcare access, and the team will develop policy recommendations for poverty reduction and strengthened social protection measures which can inform policies and interventions, targeting the health challenges faced by economically vulnerable populations.
