Institutional challenges to poverty alleviation: assessing the synergistic impact of land rights, extension, and financial services in Tanzania
Jaah Mkupete
In rural areas of Tanzania, 75% of the population relies on agriculture; consequently, land tenure is crucial to poverty reduction in the country. Research by Jaah Mkupete, at the Mkwawa University College of Education, will examine whether secure land rights alone are enough to alleviate poverty or if they need to go hand in hand with a well-functioning credit market and improved access to agricultural technical information to have any real impact on poverty levels. Researchers will compare the average poverty outcomes of households with land rights alone, those with land rights plus complementary agricultural skill development and credit services, and those without land rights. The analysis will allow researchers to assess the potential poverty-reduction impact of additional services, both technical and financial, on those who have secured land rights. The findings will be disseminated to inform policymaking and evidence-based decision-making to foster positive socio-economic outcomes in rural Tanzania.
