The moderation effects of financial inclusion and social protection on the relationship between climate change and poverty in Tanzania
University of Dar Es Salaam & Women Leading Change for Better Lives (WOLBEL)
Tanzania is large and geographically diverse, meaning the effects of climate change, and the consequent economic damage, are felt unevenly across the country. This means that financial inclusion and social protection interventions aimed at those pushed into poverty by climate change must be well targeted if they are to be successful. The University of Dar Es Salaam and Women Leading Change for Better Lives (WOLBEL) addressed the fact that the empirical studies at household and ward-level necessary for this type of targeting do not exist. Their research project applied big data analytics to data from the National Panel Survey and remote sensing data from satellites. They aimed to understand the effects of climate change on poverty at household and ward-level and to assess the impact of financial inclusion and social protection measures on the relationship between climate change and poverty. Findings are available to feed into the development of tools for poverty and inequality reduction.
