Reenergising the race to 2030: Data and evidence to accelerate progress towards SDG1
With five years remaining of Agenda 2030, the world is off-track to meet SDG 1. Set-backs over the last 5 years due to Covid-19, conflict, climate change and other factors have led to a reversal in poverty reduction in most countries. And some countries’ poverty reduction trends had plateaued even before these crises, suggesting new approaches to address poverty are needed independent of the latest setbacks. The DEEP International Conference on Poverty Evidence will take place in Arusha, Tanzania from 18 to 20 June 2025, bringing together experts and practitioners with actionable knowledge and tools to accelerate poverty reduction and prevent further impoverishment. DEEP is inviting proposals for presentations which reflect the conference’s thematic tracks on measuring extreme poverty; the drivers and patterns of extreme poverty, and evaluating impacts on extreme poverty.
Although the outlook for achieving SDG 1 is not promising, the next five years offer an opportunity to reinvigorate the momentum around poverty reduction that was seen in the early years of the SDGs. There are ample opportunities to learn from how earlier progress on poverty reduction was achieved, to make use of new innovations and evidence that weren’t available until now, and to reimagine the drivers and solutions to poverty in light of recent global changes.
Academics, politicians, policymakers, development partners, private sector, NGO representatives, philanthropists and graduate students will assemble at the conference to discuss leading challenges and opportunities to address poverty in the coming years. It will provide an opportunity to bring together people working on tools and generating new evidence on poverty reduction with those making decisions that impact on poverty.
The closing date for applications is 13 January 2025. Visit the event page for more information.
