What drives extreme poverty?

Within this research theme, we will generate insights into patterns of extreme poverty that are emerging, those that are persisting and the drivers of these patterns.

We live in a world that has changed radically over the last few decades and we need to understand what drives extreme poverty in this continually evolving landscape. Accelerating economic, environmental, political, social, and technological changes are also likely to affect how we tackle extreme poverty today. Previous pathways out of extreme poverty may no longer be available and new pathways may have opened up.

Broadly, the areas of focus for these drivers in this area of DEEP’s research are:

  • Covid-19
  • Climate change
  • Fragility and conflict
  • Economic growth and technological change
  • Demographic megatrends in urbanisation, migration and demographic change.
