The Impact of Financial Inclusion on Women’s Economic Empowerment and Household Food Security in Ethiopia

Date: 20 February 2026
Resource Type: Challenge Fund Working paper

Financial inclusion has emerged as a powerful tool for driving economic development and improving household food security. This study investigates the causal link between financial inclusion, women’s economic empowerment, and household food security in Ethiopia using an explanatory sequential mixed-method design.

The study’s findings also reveal that despite progress in physical access and account ownership, the current state of financial inclusion in Ethiopia reflects a dual reality of emerging progress constrained by persistent utilisation gaps. Qualitative findings suggest that achieving transformative impact depends on moving beyond mere physical availability and towards a ‘credit-plus’ strategy, and on the provision of affordable, tailored financial products that drive active utilisation by the wider population.
