Repeated Flooding, Internal Displacement, and Urban Poverty: A Case Study of Vulnerable Low-Income Neighbourhoods in Antananarivo

Junot Livah RANDRIAMIZANA

In Antananarivo, repeated flooding and internal displacement have exacerbated urban poverty, particularly among poor urban populations living in high flood-risk areas around the capital. This project, led by Junot Livah Randriamizana, will examine how flooding intensifies urban poverty and leads to new population displacements in low-lying neighbourhoods. In addition, the project will seek to identify the resilience strategies that poor households put in place to cope with these challenges. Adopting both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study combines interviews with city administrative officials and survey data from 400 households affected by the phenomenon, which will subsequently be analysed using statistical and econometric methods. The project will produce a detailed report, policy briefs, and a reusable database to inform the development of inclusive policies. By linking multidimensional poverty with social and cultural dynamics, the research aims to inform national strategies, strengthen local capacities, and provide evidence-based solutions to reduce inequalities and enhance the resilience of urban communities.
